Famous Artist Pinwheels
Posted by Krissy PondenThe sixth grade began the year in art by studying famous artists, their styles, and the art movements they influenced. We started with Bridget Riley and her optical illusion art and then went on to Van Gogh and his post-impressionistic style of painting. Next, we learned about the neo-plasticism works of Mondrian and the modernist works of Georgia O’Keeffe. To round up our study, we looked at Henri Matisse’s abstract cut outs. The students explored drawing and painting in the style of each of the artists and used various media and techniques to achieve their unique characteristics. Each artist was represented in a triangle on a pinwheel, with Matisse’s colorful collage finishing up the back. It was a wonderful start to the year in art and a great way for the sixth graders to be exposed to famous paintings and artists.
