January Greatest Hits in 5th grade Science!
Posted by Colleen NoyesYou say StomAAAta, I say Stomaaaaaaaahta! 5th grade science students continued their deep dive into biodiversity throughout the month of January. PS – stomata are the microscopic pores that take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen………just sayin (deep breath of thanks from us mammals)
We accidentally stumbled upon a teachable moment when the class found and put on their noses the “Samara” seed of maple trees. Sometimes called helicopters because of the way that they are carried by wind and help populate our forests.
Bird mounts, horseshoe crab, sea star and whelk exoskeletons helped us to learn about the incredibly interesting ways animals (and plants) survive and pass along energy in their ecosystems.
Ask any 5th grader about Sea Cucumbers and how they defend themselves! It’s gross but cool.
