Labor of Love
Posted by Faith BarbutoA student alerted my attention to the lack of Valentine’s decoration it our classroom. This simply would not do! Together we researched some fun Valentine crafts many of which he noted we did not “have the supplies for”. We stumbled across a simple Q-tip painted heart but I knew it could be more. It reminded me of the art of Alma Woodsey Thomas, one of my favorite female artists to share with the class. Alma was black female art teacher born in 1891. She is remembered for her mosaic art but what I love most about her story is that she was not recognized for her art until she 80 years old! I told my students about her life and work as they worked to create intricate dot patterns on their Valentines. We also turned it into a math lesson in symmetry. Each student cut out a tear drop shape from a folded pink paper. They opened it to find a perfectly symmetrical heart! Then they used Q-tips to paint one line of dots at a time and then fold again to create mirror images. The fruits of our labor are proudly displayed on our front door, welcoming guests to a classroom filled with love!
