Math in the Bathroom?
Posted by Faith BarbutoEarlier this year I turned the blank walls of our classroom bathroom into a “peenatarium” in an effort to make some planet loving friends feel more at home there. Well, the idea has stuck and in my class is often heard to say “I’m going to Pluto” on the way to the restroom. Visitors come from near and wide to see the coolest bathroom in school, so I thought it the perfect place for a math lesson! Our science focus this week is the sky at night and we used the order of the planets in our solar system as a way to learn ordinal numbers. Since we have a huge solar system mural in the bathroom, it was time for a field trip. First we learned the names of the ordinal numbers and talked about when we use them. I wrote them on sticky notes and the students took turns labeling the order on our bathroom poster. Next each student was given a planet and had to identify using the poster. They wrote the name of their planet and its ordinal number, with some teacher assistance. Next they colored their planet and added their own illustration of the night sky. Lastly, we hung our planets in the hallway, in ordinal order of course. Stroll by and see next time you are your way to the bathroom that’s out of this world!
