Our students put on quite a special assembly for this year’s Grandparents and Special Friends!
The performances kicked off with PreK-3 students singing I Want to be a Superhero! We do a lot of dramatic play in PreK-3 and with this song the students acted out different ways they could be superheros! The kids realized the best way we can be a superhero is by being kind and helping one another!
Next up was PreK-4 and kindergarten singing Pennies from Heaven. We learned this song during our unit on Jazz. The students listened to many different artists’ versions of this jazz standard, and then we put our “spin” on it! The students really wanted to find a way to add a prop to their song and dance, and we were lucky enough to have a parent come in and help the students create wonderful umbrellas for our song!
First grade was next singing I’ve Got Rhythm. This song was perfect for this class since we have been focusing a lot on more difficult rhythms this year in music. One great way to learn rhythms is through movement. The first graders learned a tap step called the paradiddle, which consists of four eighth notes, and showed off their tapping and rhythm during this performance!
The second graders were so excited to perform their song Friend Like Me. This is a class who loves to be creative and their creativity shined through in their song and dance which they helped choreograph!
Third and fourth grades came together to perform a much loved song Puff The Magic Dragon. This started as a third grade recorder piece, and as soon as the fourth graders heard us practicing they wanted to learn it too! The fourth graders learned how to accompany the third graders on this song using the ukeleles. It was a beautiful performance!
Fifth grade was then ready to come up for their performance of the song If We Hold On Together. The students learned how to accompany themselves on this song which is a very difficult task!
After the fifth grade, junior chorus chose the song Bridge Over Troubled Water to sing to their special friends. The students really analyzed the meaning of this song and that helped them to sing with great emotion.
Last on the stage was the Upper School chorus accompanied by the Upper School instrumentalists. They sang a powerful song, I Have a Voice, which they dedicated to all of their family and special friends who helped them to find their own voice and strength.
In May Day tradition the assembly closed with the Maypole dances. First, the fourth graders performed the spider weave and then the fifth graders ended the assembly with the braid weave both of which were done beautifully. Great job to all!
