Meeting the Challenge at Robonanza 2015!
Posted by Lloyd MitchellOn Saturday, May 2nd, eighth graders Hannah, Rachel and Clara traveled to Greenwich Academy for the annual Robonanza competition. These three students worked hard to prepare for the event all week long, coming in early and finding every spare minute in the day to finish tweaks to their projects. Their efforts paid off as they were well prepared for the events. The girls managed to complete all squire challenges with flying colors. Competing in the more complex challenges, jousting, archery and drawbridge, went very well in the trial runs, but when faced with being in front of the judges, things did not go as planned. Hannah ran a respectable score of 7 out of 15 in the jousting event. The archery event, which featured a complex design by the girls to toss a hacky sack at a target, was next. Their design worked, but the girls credited a faulty hacky sack which led to a lower score. The final, most complicated event involved “crossing the moat on a drawbridge” which was not placed until the robot was on the course and running. So, your program had to be right before starting the event. Our robot had the right idea, but failed to cross the bridge. I congratulate the girls for a tremendous effort and a great job representing Unquowa!
