Not-So-Spooky Stories Sizzle!
Posted by Ariel WarshawFifth grade writers spent most of October working on “Not So Spooky Stories” in our narrative writing unit. We learned about the five story elements – plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting – with a special focus on a well-sequenced plot. Students explored how various dialogue types could help further their story telling, and practiced writing effective figurative language that would add to their tales.
Students were asked to consider what makes a story told around a campfire different from others. “What should it sound like?” “How should you read your story in order to build suspense?” “What tips could we share with one another?” The students practiced reading their final drafts using the PVLEGS strategy (Poise, Voice, Life, Eye Contact, Gestures, and Speed).
Our culminating event was our annual Bonfire Night. That evening, three bonfires burned as our storytellers read their tales to admiring family and classmates. Guests nibbled on caramel – and chocolate-dipped apples and sipped on hot apple cider. The writers engaged their audiences with descriptive details, figurative language, and dramatic plotlines. It was a wonderful evening filled with the magic of the fall season – one our 5th graders won’t soon forget!
