Shakespeare with Second Grade
Posted by Alyson CahillIt’s (finally) spring in second grade drama class which means…Shakespeare! Students recently completed a unit on The Bard’s most famous playwright, which included activities on his language and writing style. Students learned that Shakespeare made up many words we use today (such as alligator, eyeball, and luggage) so we made up our own list of words and used them to write short scenes. We also learned about Shakespeare’s use of iambic pentameter and how it almost sounds musical – we stomped our feet to emphasize the beats in the line “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?” from Romeo and Juliet. Did you know that even “Green Eggs and Ham” uses stressed syllables in its poetry? Finally, students reenacted one of the forest scenes from Midsummer Nights Dream – everyone had turns becoming Puck, the mischievous elf, Titania, the fairy queen, or the fairies themselves.
