Symbolism & Keith Haring
Posted by Krissy PondenTo begin the year in visual arts, sixth graders looked at the iconic images of 1980s graffiti artist, Keith Haring. We watched this video clip of Haring profiled on the CBS Evening News in 1982, right at the beginning of his quick rise to fame. Haring was prolific during his brief but enduring career, creating thousands of images in rapid fire succession in the NYC subway, on murals around the world, on canvases that were hung in galleries and even on t shirts and other merchandise that he sold in his Pop Shop. Working in marker, the students created their own Haring-inspired cartoons using a combination of his iconic symbols and their own equally creative ones. If you aren’t familiar with Haring’s work (and even if you are), it’s hard to tell which are which!
