Thinking Metrically in Sixth Grade
Posted by Craig Knebel6th Graders competed in the Mini Metrics Olympics in Science class today. They learn metrics by doing Cotton Ball Shot Put [measuring length], Straw Javelin [again length], Strong Man Sponge [volume] and Domino Grab [mass]. This lab reinforced their metric knowledge with lots of competitive measuring practice.
We took the lesson outside to the brook to continue to practice. Students took the temperature of the water, used a meter stick to measure the depth of the water and then recorded the time it takes for a seed to float two meters down the brook.
