Unquowa Children Earth Day Song
Posted by Senad MehinovicEvery year, as Earth Day approaches, I am looking for a good song to be performed at our school. There are some out there, but not a lot. Since I had some success in writing of a children songs back in my native Bosnia and Herzegovina I decided to write the music my self. Since the theme is related to the nature, the song should talk also about some activities of our students here at Unquowa. Our third grade students are very enthusiastic as far as music class is concerned. I asked Mrs. Gordon to give her class some instructions in writing the lyrics for this particular subject. Soon enough, they gave me a lot of lyrics and ideas. So, the song is not only about the beauty of our native planet, but about what we are doing here at our school, and what is done or should be more intensely done worldwide.
It was a great joy for me to write the music for the song and even greater joy to rehearse with them. Thanks to Carlene Gordon and Pat Bruno, who helped in preparation of the song for upcoming Earth Day Celebration, we were able to have its premiere performance for our Earth Day Assembly recently. Video projection created by Lloyd Mitchell for this event, added another dimension to the performance. Thanks for help and encouragement with this project to our Head of the School, Miss Lauer as well.
Our third grade students are quite capable in poetry and music composition. We look forward to helping them to build on their first works of musical art.
