What Makes Simple Machines Go?
Posted by Lloyd MitchellFourth grade just wrapped up their unit working with Lego’s WeDo robotics where the focus is developing simple machines that primarily are driven by gears. In connection with science class, the students investigated how different gears affect how their different projects would work. Additionally, learning how to use a tilt sensor as well as a motion sensor was a key part of this unit. Students proposed hypotheses of what might happen, and then it was on to building and programming. This level of programming segways into the next level of robotics which starts at the end of fifth grade. It’s always great to see a smile on a child’s face and the sense of accomplishment when they complete a build and it works! We looked at how a top spinner works to understanding how a plane motor would function when ascending and descending! It was a great unit all around!
