Eighth grade science started their year learning about physics, but more specifically, energy, energy transfer and energy transformation. In this lab, students tested their engineering skills as they were given materials and a brief rundown on the procedure and then independently construct what is known as, “The Comeback Can.” If this contraption is built correctly, when the student rolls the can away from them, it will gradually slow down until it stops for a moment, in which it will then reverse its direction and return to the student. This is a terrific lab to better understand the difference between energy transfer and energy transformation, the various types of energy (i.e. kinetic energy, potential energy, elastic potential energy, sound energy etc.), and the factors that can influence how much of each energy is present. By the end of the lab, students had a grasp on the concept that energy cannot be created, nor destroyed; it simply changes from one form to another or from one object to another.
