Making Algebra Visible: Exploring Functions Through Hands-On Learning
Posted by Lisa SylvestroWhat happens when students can see an abstract mathematical concept in action?
Unquowa’s seventh-grade Algebra students began their study of functions by designing and using their own function machine, transforming the relationship between inputs and outputs into an interactive mathematical investigation.
Students selected input values, applied a function, and placed their predicted outputs inside plastic balls. As each ball was released from the machine, classmates worked together to solve the function and determine whether the predicted output was correct.
The activity brought an essential algebraic concept to life while encouraging students to apply mathematical reasoning, test predictions, and explain their thinking.
By making abstract relationships tangible, students develop a deeper understanding of the mathematical principles that will support increasingly complex problem-solving.
