Horseshoe Crabs are the Featured Player!
Posted by Colleen NoyesLong Island Sound adventures continue in Grade 4. Horseshoe crabs are the featured player right now. Students are learning how to understand the lifespan of these incredible prehistoric creatures. In our most recent lab, they measured the cephalothorax (the largest, wide, horseshoe-shaped front portion of the animal’s body) to find the approximate age of the species. We had 13 specimens of various sizes and the kids were able to practice on all of them. After collecting the initial data, we compared all of the information gathered from each student scientist to see if there were any trends or anomalies.
