Human Habitat
Posted by George SeferidisDuring our fall Earth Day activity, 8th graders spent part of the morning researching current environmental issues across the globe, collecting facts and statistics. After sharing their research, students explored poetry about the planet. From Emerson’s idyllic meditation on the indispensable bumblebee to contemporary pieces on environmental issues such as Alison Hawthorne Deming’s “Human Habitat,” students discussed ways in which poetry can express our love and our concerns for our wonderful planet. It was a wonderful prelude to our Earth Day hike and activities. For the rest of the week, students worked in their writer’s notebooks to create their own Earth Day poem, reflecting on nature or shedding light on recent environmental issues.
