September In the Garden
Posted by Mary CurranThe Unquowa Garden has been a busy place for learning this fall. Students returned in September to find a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There are raised beds of sungold tomatoes, marketmore cucumbers, D’Avignon radishes, purple haze carrots, deer tongue lettuce, and arugula. Marigolds and nasturtium are abundant throughout as they play an important role in attracting pollinators and protecting plants from garden pests. Students went on scavenger hunts, sampled tomatoes picked fresh off the vine, and harvested vegetables for Chef David and Chef Jessica to use in the salad bar. A large tepee covered with heirloom morning glories and purple hyacinth beans continues to be a favorite place for children to visit. Kindergartners collected marigolds seeds to investigate, and 5th graders learned to identify herbs by making careful observations of their smell, taste, leaf size, and texture. Several classes collected black swallowtail caterpillars and observed them forming chrysalises, and there were many sightings of praying mantises. Come and explore the garden with your children this fall as there is much to see!
