Virginia Birdsall Grant Update: Meet the Goldbergs
Posted by Katie BrennaMrs. Ponden and I were excited to bring a taste of our Oaxacan adventures to Unquowa this fall, but little did we know exactly to what extent the themes of Oaxaca would continue to weave not only throughout our curriculums, but also throughout others threads of our life. Knowing that the November Professional Development Day was fastly approaching, we reached out to Alan and Trudy Goldberg, friends of Linda Hanna, the woman that hosted us in the village of San Andrés Huayapam this past July. When we departed Oaxaca, Linda had suggested that we follow-up with the Goldbergs, friends of hers and aficionados of Oaxacan folk art that live here in New Canaan. We are so happy that we heeded Linda’s advice and accepted the Goldbergs’ gracious invitation to view their extensive art collection. Little did we know that our timing to connect was impeccable, as the Goldbergs recently arranged to gift their entire collection to the Mexican Museum in San Francisco. The former Mexican Minister of Culture along with an anthropologist visited the Goldbergs to assist in this arrangement and reported the following to the Museum: “We are very impressed with your collection which is of the highest quality for the period it covers and that the Museum will be enriched by accepting your donation. We are very pleased to know that our collection will be well cared for and seen by a wide audience.” Needless to say, our experience of meeting and visiting with the Goldbergs was nothing short of extraordinary. Mrs. Ponden and I will continue to see out ways to keep Oaxaca alive in our lives and the lives of students.
