We Celebrated the Leap Year in Mandarin!
Posted by Yajuan Zhang
It is always quite exciting to celebrate a leap year with something special since you only have the chance every four years. No wonder when I told students the last day of February that we were going to describe a frog in Mandarin, their facial expressions revealed all of the excitement and some worries. “Can we do it?” I could read their question immediately. Then I said, “Yes!” “But how?” Very quickly I got another question from them. “You will see.” With this simple answer, students started their interaction of the practice and the group collaboration right away.
It was the first time for students to learn every word in the description. But with the patterns and the rhythm of the sentences, it sounded so natural to describe the body parts and the movement of one, two, three and up to four frogs. If you didn’t watch the video, you couldn’t imagine how well students did their practice in just one class. I am so happy that I took the video and captured a special gift from our fifth graders for this fun celebration of the leap year.
