Humanities is…
Posted by Debbie LeidleinWhat is Humanities?
First of all it is a new part of the curriculum for our sixth, seventh and eighth graders. But, how can you study humanities if you don’t know what it is? Ms. Lloyd, Dr. Rasti and I first discussed the concept with the students and then brainstormed as a group to determine what humanities might include. Afterward we broke into small groups to craft definitions. Some were as basic as “history+English=humanities,” while others were more complex such as “humanities is the study of the human past; what we’ve done, what we’ve created, and how we’ve changed.” Other examples of definitions are: “Humanities is understanding people’s cultures, religions, and opinion.” “Humanities is the study of literature based on the philosophy of different humans over time.”
The final definition agreed upon is “Humanities is the compassionate study of cultures, religions and nations of the world through art, ideas, literature and history in order to understand other people and ourselves.”
