Infinite Roots
Posted by Karen WilliamsonIn seventh grade humanities students have been studying about Africa. To bring another dimension to their studies, we decided to have Henry Jones, from Infinate Roots, come and visit our school for a drumming workshop. The workshop began with Mr. Jones introducing each instrument and where it came from within Africa. We learned that Mr. Jones had hand made each one of these instruments. He also spoke to how you do not “hit” a drum, you play the instrument. Mr. Jones spoke in such a way that the students were on the edge of their seats the entire time listening and soaking in every word he had to say. We learned two different songs that the entire 7th grade played together. Then when the 6th and 8th graders came for our presentation, the 7th graders became the teachers and taught them how to play and respect the instruments. The students left Friday afternoon with great knowledge and a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.
