January- A New Tradition!
Posted by Sarah RaggioJanuary was a reset button for book reports in Grade 5. Over the course of this year we have filled out various different types of book report forms and 3-D models of book reports. January, the beginning of a new year, seemed like the perfect time to try something new. Since many students were having trouble finding their next great book to read, they were asked to give a “5 minute Book Buzz” about a book they read recently and loved. My hope was that they would inspire a classmate to try a book out of their comfort zone or a genre they had never read before. In addition to talking about their book, they filled out a quick form and took notes on the books their peers presented. Each student took this note packet home to use as a reference for future book shopping. My hope was that each student would be inspired by at least one of the “buzzes” and would give that book a try. I have to admit, I wrote down a couple of titles that I want to read. The students definitely inspired their peers and I was so proud to see them discuss books and book choices in such a mature and educated way. We ended the discussion talking about buying books, lending books to peers and even going to the library! I watched one student’s eyes sparkle as she said, “We could go get lost in the library for the day?!” Who knows? Maybe a library field trip is in our future? Way to go 5th Graders!
