Starting The Year By Studying The Past
Posted by Trésor KayumbaThe 5th grade class commenced the year on an exciting note by being introduced to the concept of historiography; the study of historical writing and the writing of history. Students analyzed various Unquowa archive. These archives included photos, student publications, and sports statistics. Students also analyzed the famous poster of Muhammad Ali’s May 25th, 1965 instantaneous defeat of Sonny Liston.
The gradual introduction of history and how it influences our understanding of ourselves and society at large has allowed the class to have vibrant conversations. We have discussed the projected biases in history and we are prepared to experience these biases through various text sources assigned in the syllabus. Some of the text we will engage are; Ronald Takaki: A Different Mirror for Young People: A History of Multicultural America, Howard Zinn: A People’s History of the United States, Dr. Michael J Berson and others: Social Studies, The United States: Making a New Nation.
