Grammar Studies
Posted by Debbie LeidleinThe fifth grade spends time each week in our writing seminar class studying how authors create their sentences. We then work to create our own sentences in the same pattern. Recently, we studied a sentence from 14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy. We looked mainly at how Deedy used prepositional phrases to add detail to her writing. Here are some of the sentences we created with prepositional phrases:
The swimmers swam to the wall with the speed and grace of dolphins. Gemma
Maxim walks forward with the anger and rage of a tiger that lost its prey. Maxim
The dogs trot to her with the elegance and grace of cats. Jordan
The elephants charged at them with the power and noise of a cannon. Riley
The adults rushed to the popcorn stand with the energy and enthusiasm of a child. Sophia
The siblings sprinted to her with love and joy for dogs. Ruby
We can’t wait to see what next week’s sentence will be!
