Today at Unquowa, we focused our attention to comm

Today at Unquowa, we focused our attention to commemorating the rich history and cultures of Indigenous American peoples with important conversations in all our grades.

In Early Childhood classes, students learned about the significance of “The Three Sisters”—corn, beans, and squash—as vital food sources for Native tribes. They spent time planting in the garden and counted dried beans, corn, and squash seeds too!

First graders explored the tradition of Navajo Sand Painting by creating their own beautiful designs while discovering the meaning behind this art form.

Third graders engaged with the traditional game of Hubbub, played by the Wampanoag and Pequot tribes, connecting them with local Connecticut history and our fourth graders read "Encounter," reflecting on perspectives regarding Columbus before and after the story.

Fifth graders delved into important texts like "Indian No More" by Traci Sorell, discussing the historical discrimination faced by Native Americans beyond Columbus. They also worked with Sorell's "We Are Still Here" to create a timeline of policies affecting Native communities.

In Upper School Spanish classes, students learned about how different indigenous groups all around South America influenced Spanish we know today, and different aspects of food and culture.

...and in Visual Arts, sixth graders studied Wendy Red Star’s "The Last Thanks," seventh graders examined Jeffrey Veregge’s Marvel redesign, and eighth graders looked into Cannupa Hanska Luger's "Mirror Shield Project" and its significance for Standing Rock.

To cap off the day, Chef Adam prepared a delicious traditional lunch featuring herb roasted chicken and squash!
