The Role of Active Listening
Posted by Lloyd MitchellSeventh grade has been exploring the idea of being an active listener in advisory. During the first activity each student was tasked to play the role of the listener while a classmate talked about a particular topic for 3 minutes and then we flipped roles. While this was challenging for many of them, they discovered they learned more about the topic than they would have if they’d been able to respond. Our second activity was about letting nature speak to us. We spent 25 minutes in a spot in our wooded area of the school campus and sat while nature did the talking. We found that this time brought our busy world to a calm pace. The experience enhanced everyone’s awareness of our surroundings. Now we challenge you, take 3o minutes and disconnect, it can go a long way.
